La Escuela Del Sol Interview

By Interviewer at 05/20/07 17:33
spanish school La Escuela Del Sol Interview
Name of your website?

La Escuela Del Sol

Your name?

Jeremy Levine

Your Location (city, etc)

Montezuma

When did you start your website and why?

I started my website in March of this year as a means to find and educate prospective students about my new school in Costa Rica. Through the site, students are able to see what we're about and hopefully apply to our programs.

Please give us a short summary of your website, business model, etc

La Escuela Del Sol is an immersion program for people who want to learn Spanish fast while having an adventure in a tropical paradise. The school, located in Montezuma, Costa Rica offers a 1 to 4 week, college level, Spanish language program as well as additional courses for adventure and self enhancement. Those courses currently include surfing, yoga and poi (fire dancing).

We make our money from the programs themselves and eventually through merchandising, such as selling poi and customized t-shirts. I'd like one to say "Sol Train", "Students of the Sol" or "Sol Survivor." I'm still working out the kinks.

What has been the most difficult part of creating and running your website?

My web designer is in El Salvador. He's a great guy and a great designer, but there have been a lot of misspellings. My meta tags are hardly legible, etc. But they've done a great job overall. I love how the site turned out.

What has been the easist part of operating your website?

The integration of my site to my email. I like that.

What was your biggest mistake?

Not knowing how to optimize the site for search engines. I'm still working on that.

Who maintains your website and why?

Roberto Palomo of Web Informatica in El Salvador. He's a dear friend of a dear friend and I really like his work. He's a pleasure to deal with.

Tell us how your business has benefitted from your website?

I've added customers. It's the best way to advertise in places I'll never go.

What are your views on ecommerce and the future of the internet?

Its reach is not going to slow down any time soon. It's great for the consumer, that's for sure.

What are your views on Search Engine Optimization (SEO)?

As a business owner, I think it's a necessary evil. I don't like that fact that half of the links I get on a google search are link farms, but no one's trying to send you irrelevant information. That would be a waste of everyone's time.

What are your views on Search Engines? Have they helped or hindered your website?

As I'm learning to utilize them, they are nothing but a great help to my website. I just hope I can get the right message to the right people. If I can do that, everyone will win in the end.

What method has been most successful for promoting your website?

Google Adwords. I can't help but feel I'm paying too much, but most of my customers have come through there.

What method has been least successful for promoting your website?

Finding people through myspace. It's way too time consuming.

What would you like to see change with respect to the internet?

I want more access to television shows. I'm moving to Costa Rica, so I'm gonna need my fix.

What is your website address?

La Escuela Del Sol

Resorts vs Bed and Breakfasts in Costa Rica

By Wilbur Corncob at 05/20/07 09:01
, real-estate:Beachfront Retreat 3 Cabinas 2 Houses Central Pacific: Covered Tile Terrazos
Think of the options... a five star all inclusive resort that costs so much you'll think you need to be a millionaire to stay there or some bed and breakfasts that are so cheap you think the price is a misprint.

Which is better?

You might find at the all inclusive resort you sit by the pool and drink so much that you would have had the same experience if you had stayed in Miami! Someone that works there might even tell you that it is dangerous to leave the bounds of the resort, unless of course its on an tour that costs extra!

In the bed and breakfast you might meet people that knows the ins and outs of Costa Rica. People in various stages of moving to Costa Rica or living in Costa Rica. Or other travellers that will share their secrets with you.

You'll see the real Costa Rica and make lots of new friends. You'll have a great vacation and adventure. If you drink you might explore the Costa Rican beers and wine.

What is your Favorite Costa Rica Bed and Breakfast?

By Wilbur Corncob at 05/19/07 08:09
alajuela What is your Favorite Costa Rica Bed and Breakfast?
Feel free to add comments here with your favorite Costa Rica Bed and Breakfast.

Mine is Vida Tropical. They are located in Alajuela, Costa Rica.

The reason they are my favorite is their breakfast. The food delicious, though I'm not sure it is quite a classical Costa Rican breakfast. More importantly, is the other guests you'll meet. Maybe you'll make some life long friends and if not at least have a great time talking about Costa Rica.

Their rates are unbeatable... $30/single, $45/double, but they are way stinge on wifi... "one hour free High Speed WiFi Internet". Check their website for any changes!

Now its your turn...

Spanish: More Random Musings About Everything
Spanish 101; Lesson #1. Don't get too cocky just because you have finally gotten to where you can order your breakfast in Spanish. Some tico "Ingenuity" and tips on finding good airfare.

CRTR Episode 10 - Costa Rica's Northern Zone
Costa Rica Talk Radio Episode #10 show notes. Podcasts about Costa Rica. I personally prefer to read, skim and skip! And, most importantly reread and cut and paste things of interest

Mastatal, Dominical, Baru, oh my!
Too many places and too little internet! Our classes and activities have picked up in Mastatal... The adventures of Bridgid in Costa Rica and her love for rattle snakes! I remember the sales pitch for one tour guide being that there were 19 kinds of poisonous snakes in the area where we were going to walk. Without the guide, we didn't see any of the snakes, or more importantly, maybe none of them saw us!

Costa Rica Addresses

By Wilbur Corncob at 05/16/07 13:37
No, you won't find 1 Main Street in Costa Rica and probably won't find any street names or signs. If some place is referred to by a street number, it probably won't help if you ask anyone for help.

All addresses (directions) in Costa Rica are based on landmarks and meters. 150 meters west of the Church 25 meters north. That would translate to 1-1/2 blocks west of the Church and 1/2 block north. Don't don't expect half blocks 50 meters to be used commonly and even more rare is the 1/4 block, 25 meters.

Don't get your meter stick out and start counting either. 100 meters = 1 block, whether its length is 50 ft or 5000 feet.

Good luck when the direction is 5 km north of something. That might mean 5km or it might just mean "a long way". Also good luck with the landmarks as they may or may not still exist.

Asking for directions isn't always useful either. Once I had an ultrasound test at a lab. Once I got to within 1 block of where I though the lab was I asked for directions and got sent someplace far far away (I took I taxi).

There it was, the lab I was looking for. Inside they were confused because I was sure I had an appointment and they were sure I didn't. They did the test anyway.

When I saw my doctor I learned the lab I was looking for was right where I was when I asked for directions. The nice lady that gave me directions sent me to a completely different lab with the same name!

As a tourist it can be really fun using these addresses and the adventure of searching place. When you live there it gets old fast!

When someone starts telling you that Costa Rica is moving away from being a 3rd world country, ask them for an address.

Ocean Views of Costa Rica

By Wilbur Corncob at 05/13/07 11:11
Costa Rica, any: view of the ocean
I think an ocean view in Costa Rica is a lot better idea than trying to get beach front property.

You don't have any issues with concessiones and there are a lot fewer people in your front yard!

In the end the peace and tranquality of an ocean view will beat the beach front condo.
