There are many ways to change your money in Costa Rica, though most of them only apply in big tourist areas like San Jose.If you're staying at an international hotel of 3-stars or more, you should be able to change your money at the front desk or concierge. The fees are generally reasonable, and it's very convenient. Almost any bank can change your money, and do so with very reasonable fees and the most current, official exchange rate. This is a very good way, but banks work short hours, so can be a bit of a hassle. The very best way to change your money is at the ATM. The odds that your debit card from back home will work in the corner ATM is very high. You'll likely pay about a $3 fee (or so) to your bank, but you'll get the absolutely exact, correct exchange rate, without a fee. It's cheap, it's easy, and you don't have to bring nearly as much cash with you, which can be dangerous in terms of losing your money to misplacement or theft. Some tourist stores or restaurants may offer to change your money, but the rates they'll charge will be way beyond the market rate, and you may end up paying double or triple for your meal. The worst way to change your money is through some dude on the street. Counterfeiting is uncommon, but unfair exchange rates and other scams are more likely. Worst of all, an unknown guy you just met on the street will know how much money you have, and if he isn't there to rob you, but his friends around the corner just may be. Visitors to Costa Rica should exercise due caution. It's not safe like your neighborhood, but safe like the neighborhood a few miles away from yours where you wouldn't want to travel alone at night, and might not want to flash too much cash or jewelry.Like any Latin nation (or New York), beware of pickpockets, purse snatchers, muggers and car-jacking. Protect your valuables by keeping your good jewelry at home, using a money belt or necklace, and keeping to well-lit areas, even when traveling in pairs. Don't leave valuables in plain site in your car, and if you find your tire(s) slashed, don't pull over until you know you're somewhere safe. It's really not a dangerous place, per se, but a nickel of caution is worth a colón of regret... that's the local currency, in case my lackluster joke didn't make sense. Knife muggings and rape are not uncommon, and there's no national military. Like almost any nation in the world, the police are less ethical than they are in the states. Also, beware that pedestrians don't have the right of way, so keep your wits about you and avoid driving at night, especially in unfamiliar places. Short answer, there isn't one. Longer answer, it's strong and proud, but only exists in the past. After the civil war ended in 1948, President José Figueres Ferrer retired the nation's armed services, and military abolition was written into the national constitution the following year. They haven't needed (or wasted precious, limited resources) on a standing army ever since. Imagine if all the military money went to education, culture, and police-grade security. The budget is easier to balance (though never "easy"), and there's more to go around for the things people need every day. Tourists may wish to visit the Museo Nacional de Costa Rica in the Cuartel Bellavista, or enjoy December 1st, the Día de la Abolición del Ejército (Military abolition day), established in 1986. A nation without an army? Can't say it sounds all that bad to me, and it's certainly worked for Costa Rica. Tags: military • culture • education • 0 Comments. - Permalink |

It's not the spiciest fare, but rich with fresh produce like black beans and plantains, which may be part of all three meals. Plantains are like bananas, but less sweet, so you can actually eat them at every meal, but bananas are common in meals too, even fried bananas. The traditional lunch dish is casado, which is beans and rice (not mixed), usually served with chicken, pork or carne asada,) along with a salad. Plantains, cheese or tortillas are common, so make sure you try them if you get a chance. Be sure to try the picadillo, which is a spiced meat and veggie combo. Fresh veggies are rounded out nicely with peppers, onion, potato and a variety of squashes and corn (sometimes as tortillas, soup, or otherwise).
